The first the MSL images showed what appeared to be dust particles clinging to the lens covers of the front Hazcams. Either the lens covers acquired a static charge during the descent or the particles themselves are charged. The electrification of both could be caused by the friction of air moving across a surface. One notices the production of static electricity while walking on a carpet in winter when the air is cold and dry. These are the conditions on Mars. Static electricity can produce some interesting effects like the Yukimarimo in the Antarctic. Will anything similar be found in Gale Crater?
