The Internet (WWW) is now 20 years old.

March, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary for the proposal for the internet, the World Wide Web, at CERN in Geneva. There were other networks which came earlier but Tim Berniers-Lee's inovation was the hypertext document which led the way for HTML and the webpage.

Dial-up networks existed prior to this time and people were using time-sharing networks in the late 60s and early 70s. Networking led to the development of operating systems such as UNIX which allowed multiple users to access networks from remote terminals and over telephone lines. The first email was sent by Ray Tomlinson of BNN in 1971. He was also responsible for the introduction of the @ sign in email addresses.
